The factory letter describes the rifle as express caliber with 1/2 octagon barrel, plain trigger, checkered stock and pistol grip, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt, casehardened with sling swivel and states that it was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on June 8, 1882. The half octagon barrel, dust cover and loading gate are blue. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer, lever, and shotgun buttplate are casehardened. The extra finish walnut forearm and pistol grip stock have Style H checkering with a low luster oiled finish. The bottom of the stock pistol grip has an ebony insert. The Second Model receiver has a screw fastened dust cover guide rail and a dust cover with serrated edges. The barrel has a dovetail mounted Winchester Express front sight and a folding leaf rear sight marked "1876" at the top of the leaf. A folding Lyman Combination Tang Peep Sight with "JAN.26.79" patent date is factory mounted on the upper tang. The forearm cap and stock are fitted with factory sling swivels. The top of the barrel is roll stamped with the two line legend "WINCHESTER'S-REPEATING ARMS. NEW HAVEN. CT../KING'S-IMPROVEMENT-PATENTED-MARCH 29. 1866. OCTOBER 16. 1860." ahead of the rear sight. "50-CAL." is stamped on the top barrel flat ahead of the receiver. The top of the dust cover is marked "WINCHESTER EXPRESS/50 CAL. 95 GNS." "50-95" is stamped in script numerals on the brass cartridge elevator. The serial number "24227" is stamped in small numerals across the lower tang behind the lever latch.

Very fine. The barrel has 85% of the original blue finish with some light edge wear on the high points and muzzle and a small area where the finish has lifted on the upper right side. The dust cover and loading gate retain at least 85% of the bright blue finish. The forearm cap, receiver, hammer and lever have 60% plus of the casehardened finish. The case colors have faded slightly. There are several small spots of shallow pitting on the left side of the receiver and side plate. The buttplate has 80% of case colors. The brass cartridge elevator has a mellow untouched patina. The markings on the barrel and dust cover are crisp. The stock and forearm are very good. The checkered panels show light handling wear with scattered scratches on the stock and forearm. This is an exceptional example of a scarce Deluxe Special Order Winchester Model 1876, .50 Express rifle.
