Exceptional Civil War U.S. Contract Ball Repeating Carbine
This unissued ball Repeating Carbine was manufactured by Lamson & Co., of Windsor, Vermont, as part of a 1000 carbine Civil War contract with the Ordnance Department. The carbine has a blued barrel with casehardened barrel bands, receiver, hammer, loading lever and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The carbine has a seven-shot tubular magazine in the forearm. The barrel is fitted with a two-leaf rear sight. A casehardened sling bar and ring is attached to the left side of the receiver. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR.VT./U,S,/HALLS PATENT/ JUNE .23.1863./MAR.15.1864." in six lines. A script Ordnance final inspection mark is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist immediately behind the receiver. Small, block-letter, Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on the underside of the forearm and stock. Although the Ball Carbines were delivered to the Ordnance Department in May 1865, after the close of the Civil War, these limited production carbines are still considered to be Civil War weapons and are a key piece in an Federal Cavalry Carbine collection.

Excellent plus. The carbine is un-issued and in nearly new condition. It retains at least 98% plus of the original blue and 99% casehardened finish. The case colors are vivid. The blue finish on the barrel has as slight plum patina. The stock and forearm have only very minor storage wear with crisp final inspection and sub-inspection marks. This is a nearly new example of a limited production Civil War Federal Cavalry carbine.
