This is a exceptionally nice example of a Second Model Maynard manufactured during the Civil War, from an approximately 20,000 total production. Among the Union cavalry regiments armed with these Maynards were the 9th and 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Three line "MASS. ARMS CO." address on the right front of the frame and four line Maynard "1851/1859" patent marking on the left side. 3 3/4" of the breech end of the barrel is octagon and the left side flat is marked with the letter "S". The barrel, hammer, trigger and buttplate are blue. The frame and lever are casehardened. It is equipped with a pinched front sight and a three leaf folding rear sight marked with an "N" on the left side of the base. Saddle ring and bar mounted on the left side of the receiver. There is an "S" stamped on the base of the ring bar and tang of the buttplate, and the serial number appears on the lower tang. The walnut stock is a straight grip with no forearm and the left side wrist is marked with the boxed "AJN" script cartouche running horizontally and a boxed script "JM" vertically, with a small "N" just ahead of the buttplate tang.
BBL: 20 inch part octagon
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 15555
Condition: Excellent plus, unissued. The barrel retains 99% original blue finish with some thinning and edge wear on the rear flats. The buttplate has a smooth mottled brown patina with scattered original blue finish. The receiver also retains 99% plus original case colors, brightest on the right side and on the upper tang. The lever is a mix of original case colors and smooth brown patina. The stock is also excellent plus with a few very minor pressure dents and dings, and sharp cartouches. All markings are crisp and clear. Mechanically excellent. A truly exceptional Maynard Civil War carbine. Impossible to improve upon.
