Maynard Patent Single Shot rifles were manufactured circa 1860s to 1890. The Model 1873 was the first Maynard with standard chambering fo centerfire metallic cartridges. These rifles could easily be converted to rimfire by simply adding the Hadley's Patent device to the breech (this rifle is not equipped with the device). These rifles are very similar in appearance to the percussion model, with a slightly offset hammer and a firing pin contained within the bolster on the recoil shield in place of the percussion nipple. The most distinguishing thing about these rifles is the wide gap between the breech of the barrel and the recoil shield which allows for the thick rimmed brass cartridge, known as the "thick Maynard" by collectors (which could be used to extract them from the barrel). The right side of the receiver is marked " MANUFACTURED BY/MASS. ARMS CO./CHICOPEE FALLS/1882." The opposite side is marked "EDWARD MAYNARD/PATENTEE/MAY 27, 1851/DEC. 6, 1859" followed by "1873". The lower tang is marked with the serial number. The barrel numbered to the gun has a German silver blade front sight and no rear sight seat and there is a mid range tang mounted peep sight. The extra barrel is 26 inch part octagon, sleeved to 22 Maynard center fire with a folding combination globe front sight and a rear sight. The barrels are blue with casehardened levers and receiver. This upgraded model "82", uses the standard (thin) rimmed cartridge. Complete in a wooden case with wine colored velvet lining and nine compartments. In the case is a powder flask, bore brush, wooden handled screwdriver, two piece wooden cleaning rod, wooden cartridge case base, bullet seeding dye and a capper/recapper for Berdan casings.
