Early production cased Borchardt Model 1983 Semi-Automatic Pistol manufactured by Ludwig Loewe in 1893-94. The pistol has a rust blue finish with straw and niter blued small parts and checkered walnut grips. The chamber is roll-stamped: "WAFFENFABRIK/LOEWE/BERLIN" in three lines and the toggle lock is roll-stamped: "No. 75837". The right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "SYSTEM BORCHARDT. PATENT.". German "Crown/B, Crown/G" and "Crown/U" commercial proofmarks are stamped on the left side of the barrel and receiver. The serial number, "160", is stamped on major components including the wooden bases of all four magazines, the detachable wooden stock and the stock cheekpiece. The pistol is complete with the original black leather-covered case and green felt lined interior with eight compartments and a full complement of accessories. The accessories include: (1) four nickel-plated magazines with wooden bottoms, (2) detachable walnut stock, (3) detachable stock cheek-piece, (4) black leather, stock-mounted holster, (5) walnut dummy magazine with oiler, (6) nickel-plated oil bottle with black leather case, (7) tin of Carl Abermann & Co Vaseline with black leather cover, (8) wooden screw-driver/ cleaning rod handle, (9) two detachable screwdriver blades and punch, (10) brass cleaning rod and (11) twelve 7.65mm cartridges. The elegantly designed Model 1893 Borchardt Pistol was the forerunner of the Luger and one of the first commercially marketed semi-automatic pistols. Condition: Excellent. The pistol retains 98% plus of the bright original blue, niter blue and straw finish and shows only very minor handling wear. The two-piece, checkered, walnut grips are in excellent condition. The markings and proofs are crisp. All four matching serialized magazines are excellent with all of the original plated finish and minimal wear on the wooden bottoms. The walnut stock and detachable cheekpiece are in excellent condition with only minor storage wear and nearly all of the blue finish on metal components. The delicate, black, calf-skin, holster is in good overall condition with much finish flaking. All of the other accessories are in excellent condition. The case is in fine overall condition. The leather covered exterior shows moderate wear with two small tears in the leather cover on one corner. The case interior is in very good overall condition with some of tears in the felt lining. This is an exceptional, early production, Loewe Model 1893 Borchardt Semi-Automatic Pistol in nearly new condition with all of the original accessories. This may be the best and most complete example of this scarce and important pistol ever offered for sale by the Rock Island Auction Company.
