Exceptional Black Powder Colt Single Action Army Revolver Rare Error Double-Stamped Barrel
This exceptional blackpowder Commercial Colt Single Action Army revolver was manufactured in 1883. The barrel address on this revolver has a rare factory error. The 'elongated block barrel address': "COLT'S P.T. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." has been double roll die stamped which created a shadow marking. This double-stamped barrel address is documented but rarely encountered, Colt factory error. Factory errors like this one are and quite desirable and enhance the value of the revolver. The revolver has the Colt high polish commercial blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap. The frame, loading lever and hammer are color casehardened with vivid colors. The trigger and screws are fiery niter blue. The one-piece walnut grip has a varnished finish. In addition to the Colt address, the underside of the barrel is stamped with single letter, "J" and "S" sub-inspection marks behind the ejector housing and the partial serial number "7530" just ahead of the frame. The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt 'three-date/two-line' patent markings. "45 Cal" is stamped on the left side of the front trigger guard bow. A "H" Colt inspection mark is stamped in the hammer well above the firing pin hole. The inside of the loading gate is marked with the assembly number, "5944". The full serial number, "87530" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The partial serial number, "7530" is penciled on the back of the grip beneath the backstrap. All of the serial numbers match. The hammer has bordered, knurling on the spur and the ejector rod has the late production, oval head.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 80% plus of the original high polish blue and 90% color casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel, ejector housing and cylinder. Finish loss is limited to some very minor edge wear on the muzzle and the front edges of the ejector housing and some scattered and very minor handling marks. The blue finish on the trigger guard and backstrap shows moderate handling wear; about 30% of the blue is present in protected areas, the balance is gray-brown patina. The frame and hammer have 95% of more of the casehardened finish. The case colors have slivered on the loading gate. There are several patches of shallow pitting on the top strap. The grip is in excellent condition and retains 95% plus of the original varnish finish. Wear is limited to several minor handling marks on the edges of the butt. The action is crisp and functions perfectly. This is an exceptional example of an 1883 production, commercial, Colt Single Action Army Revolver. The high condition and very rare factory double-stamped barrel address would make this unique and highly desirable Single Action Army Revolver a key piece in the most advance Colt collection.
