Exceptional A.P. Casey Inspected Colt Single Action Army Cavalry Model Revolver

This very fine example of a U.S. Contract Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver manufactured in 1875. The revolver has the standard military blue finish on the barrel, ejector housing, cylinder, trigger guard and back strap. The frame, loading gate and hammer are color casehardened and the one-piece walnut grip is oil finished. The revolver has the early bullseye ejector rod head and cavalry style hammer with bordered elongated knurling on the spur. The revolver components are stamped with the distinctive mixture of "c" and "J" sub-inspection marks found on A.P. Casey sub-inspected revolvers in this serial number range. A "J" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the underside of the barrel to the right of the serial number and "c" is stamped on the side and rear face of the cylinder, the trigger guard, top of the back strap and the right side of the grip heel. "P" proofmarks are stamped on the underside of the barrel and on the side of the cylinder. The Ordnance sub-inspection mark which consists of the script initials "APC" enclosed in a rectangle is stamped on the lower left side of the grip. The full serial number "19133" is stamped on the bottom of the frame, trigger guard and back strap. The partial serial number "9133" is stamped on the underside of the barrel below the ejector housing and on the side of the cylinder. All of the visible serial numbers match. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the first style script legend "+COLT'S PT. F.A. MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A.+" with slanted crosses at either end and broken "T" in "PT". The left side of the frame is roll-stamped with the Colt two line, two date patent markings followed by the "U.S." property mark. Provenance: Richard R. Atkinson Collection.

Very fine. This revolver is in outstanding condition for an early Colt Single Action Cavalry Model and retains nearly half of the original military blue and color casehardened finish. The barrel has visible feathered polishing marks on either side of the front sight blade and above the ejector housing stud. The blue on the top and left side of the barrel is thin but nearly all of the finish is present on the protected areas on the bottom and right side of the barrel. Most of the blue finish is present on the ejector housing, trigger guard and back strap. The cylinder has a smooth blue-gray patina. The frame, loading gate and hammer retain close to 90% of the casehardened finish with some silvering on high points. Most of the niter blue finish is present on the frame screws. All of the Colt and Ordnance markings are crisp. The walnut grip is excellent with sharp "APC" and "C" sub-inspection marks. The action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very fine, high condition example of a desirable A.P. Casey sub-inspected, Indian War issue Colt Single Action Cavalry Model revolver.
