Developed by Erastus Blakeslee, a Colonel (brevet Brigadier General) with the 1st Connecticut Volunteer Cavalry, the Blakeslee cartridge boxes carried soldered iron tubes loaded with 7 cartridges for the Spencer Repeater, which allowed for rapid reloading. Only an estimated 500 of these 6 tube cartridge boxes were manufactured. Rare in any condition this set is excellent plus. This model carries 6 tubes, with black leather around the wood core, marked "BLAKESLEE'S PATENT/ US/ CAVEATFIELD" on top of the lid, brass fittings a leather strap.

Condition: Very good plus, with some crazing and lost stitching. Mild tearing of the lid tab. A pair of small cracks are visible in the wood. Tubes are original and rate very fine. Markings are excellent. These cartridge boxes saw extremely hard use, combined with the low number of boxes manufactured, this set as is in its original condition would be nearly impossible to improve upon. A must have accessory for the most advanced Civil War arms or Spencer collector.
