Excellent Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with Casehardened Receiver in 38-70 Caliber

Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle manufactured in 1894 and chambered for 38-70 W.C.F. cartridge. The rifle has the very desirable color casehardened receiver with casehardened forearm cap, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The round barrel, full-length magazine, bolt and loading gate have a blue finish. The stock and forearm are straight grain black walnut with an oil finish. The barrel has a standard sporting style front sight with nickel silver blade and a sporting style rear sight with adjustable sliding insert. The upper tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "38-70 W.C.F." is roll-stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. "-MODEL 1886-" is roll-stamped on the upper receiver tang. The lower receiver tang has the 1884 and 1885 patent dates stamped behind the trigger. The serial number "99043" is stamped in script numerals between the tang screws.

Excellent. The rifle is all original and retains 95% of the blue and casehardened finish. Nearly all of the blue finish is present on the barrel and magazine. Finish loss is limited to traces of edge wear at the muzzle and several very minor scratches on the left side of the barrel. The blue finish on the bolt and loading gate has thinned slightly but remains more than 90% intact. The case colors on the receiver, forend cap, hammer and lever are vivid and show very little handling wear. The case colors on the buttplate have faded slightly but nearly 95% of the casehardened finish is present. The stock and forearm are excellent and retain nearly all of the polished oil finish; wear is limited to a few very minor handling marks. The markings on the barrel and receiver are sharp. The rifle is in excellent mechanical condition. This is an excellent example of a very desirable Winchester Model 1886 Sporting Rifle with casehardened receiver in the scarce .38-70 W.C.F. chambering.
