Excellent Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle with Factory Letter
This is a handsome, original, very fine Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle that was manufactured in 1891. Chambered for the .40-82 W.C.F. cartridge, the rifle has a 26-inch octagon barrel with a fixed front German silver blade sight and adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight . The barrel and full length magazine are blue. The trigger, bolt and loading gate have a fire-blue finish. The receiver, loading lever, hammer, and buttplate have a casehardened finish. The forearm and stock are varnished walnut with a crescent buttplate. The upper receiver tang has the early style, one-line, marking: "- MODEL 1886-". The serial number is located on the end of the lower tang with the early, two-line, patent marking: "-PAT.OCT.14.1884. / JAN.20.1885.-" marked just behind the trigger. The top of the barrel is marked: "-MANUFACTURED BY THE- / -WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN.CONN. U.S.A.-" in two lines ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation: "40-82 W.C.F." is located on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. Based on the John Browning patent, the Model 1886 was one of the finest and strongest lever actions ever produced in a Winchester rifle. The rifle is accompanied by a factory postcard signed T.E. Hall confirming the rifles configuration. The rifle was shipped on September 3, 1892.

Very fine. 70% slightly faded original blue finish remains on the barrel and magazine the balance has thinned to a mottled brown patina concentrated to the magazine with some scattered collector type handling marks. The receiver retains 75% plus of its original vibrant case colors the balance has evenly silvered out around the edges. The loading gate retains nearly all of its original fire-blue finish. The hammer and lever also both exhibit wonderful original casecolors. The wood is fine with some casual pressure marks and scuffs but retains nearly all of its original varnish. The action is excellent. Overall an attractive example of a Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action rifle.
