Excellent WWI Model 1896 Mauser Military Contract Red 9 Semi-Automatic Pistol with Matching Stock
This is an attractive example of an early 1896 broomhandle Mauser "Red 9" military contract semi-automatic pistol that is complete with the matching walnut combination shoulder stock/holster. These were a standard 1896 Mauser pistol that was chambered for the standard 9mm cartridge. This was a standard military contract issued in late 1916 that was completed in late 1917, primarily for the Imperial German Army. The trigger, safety, rear sight elevation bar and extractor have a brilliant niter blue finish. The grips have a large "9" burned into both sides that has been filled with red paint, to identify them for use with 9mm ammunition only. The right side of the pistol receiver is marked: "WAFFENFABRIK MAUSER / OBERNDORF A NECKAR.". The top of the barrel chamber is marked: "WAFFENFABRIK / MAUSER / OBERNDORF A/N." This specific pistol does not have the Imperial eagle proof stamped on the front of the magazine, however the right side of the barrel extension has the small Crown over the script "D" proof, with the Mauser "crown / U" proofmark located on the upper left side of the receiver below the serial number. This pistol is accompanied with the original combination walnut shoulder stock/holster. The top of the attaching iron is correctly stamped "061". The pistol has all matching serial numbers including the grips.
BBL: 5 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut shoulder
Gauge: 9 mm Luger
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 49061
Condition: Very fine as partially refinished with 95% original blue finish with some light wear on the edges and high spots overall with blue loss on the grip straps and lower front edge of the magazine well, with approximately 3/4 of the length of the barrel blue finish having been professionally restored. The grips are in excellent condition with 85% of the red paint still remaining in the number 9. The walnut stock exhibits a nice matching medium brown color on the body and the lid with some signs of a very old, light sanding on the right side in front of the lid. The attaching iron correctly matches the stock and the metal parts on the stock retain 40% original blue finish with the balance having browned out. A nice example of an all matching Red "9" Broomhandle pistol.
