Excellent WWI Captured German Zeppelin Flag
Excellent WWI Captured German Zeppelin Flag This version of the Reichkriegsflagge or War Ensign was used by Germany from 1903 until 1919. The flag offered here is 36" x 25" and is in fine condition with various small holes and light soiling. It was captured from a German Zeppelin that came down in France on October 20, 1917. The Zeppelin was a type of rigid airship with an aluminum skeleton and was developed by Count Ferdinand von Zeppelin in the early 20th century. They were used for passenger transport as well as for military purposes. During World War One, Zeppelins were employed extensively as bombers and scouts in Europe as they were almost as fast as airplanes, could carry more guns and bombs, and had a greater range and endurance. Our research shows that there were four Zeppelins downed in France on the above-mentioned date:

L44- Driven south to France by a heavy storm, was shot down above Lunéville.
L45- Ran out of fuel; destroyed in forced landing near Sisteron, France, the crew being taken captive.
L49- Forced to land near Bourbonne-les-Bains and captured almost undamaged by French forces.
L50- Ran out of fuel and was driven to the Mediterranean Sea after a forced landing near Dammartin, France.

All of these Zeppelins were manufactured in 1917 and all four served in various bombing missions over England as well as routine reconnaissance. This flag was flying in one of them. An interesting piece of history, excellent size for display.
