Excellent U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Second Allin Conversion Rifle with Bayonet
Also known as the Second Model Allin "Trap Door" this rifle is a post-Civil War alteration of Springfield Model 1863 Rifle-Musket for the .50 caliber center fire cartridge. The rifle is finished "National Armory Bright" and has a black walnut oil-finished stock with a casehardened lock plate and oil-quenched casehardened breechblock. The lock plate is dated 1865 and stamped with the eagle and shield motif and "U.S. / SPRINGFIElD" in front of it. The top of the breechblock is dated "1866" and stamped with an Eagle Head. The left side of the barrel near the breech is stamped with the letter "E". Three barrel bands correctly marked with a "U", sling swivel mounted on the middle band and on the front of the trigger guard and ramrod with the knurled and slotted head. The left stock flat is stamped with a clear script "HSH" cartouche and "US" marked buttplate. A brass tag marked "SPRINGFIELD / SA033 / ARMORY" is attached to the trigger guard. Complete with a "US / J" marked socket bayonet with brass tipped leather scabbard.

Condition: Excellent. The crisp arsenal bright barrel, barrel bands, buttplate, and trigger guard have been polished many years ago with a brown rust spot present on the barrel near the muzzle. The breechblock retains 90% of the original blackened finish. The lock plate retains 90% plus of the bright original case colors with the balance a smooth gray patina. The stock is excellent with some minor dings and scratches with a couple minor gouges. The cartouche is crisp. The bayonet has been cleaned with some scattered minor pitting. The scabbard has some minor flaking but remains solid. This weapon appears unissued.
