Manufacturer: Springfield Armory U.S. Model: 1866 ALLIN CONVERSION
This is an excellent example of a U.S. Springfield Armory Second Model Allin Conversion rifle that was manufactured circa 1866. There were 25,000 produced at Springfield. These rifles were the transition from using a Civil War muzzle loader to true breech loaders. The casehardened lock plate is dated "1864" behind the hammer and is marked with the eagle and shield followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of it. The top of the breechblock is stamped "1866" above an eagle head. The left side of the barrel is stamped with the number "4" and there is an eagle head stamped at the breech. The buttplate is marked "US" on the top tang and all three barrel bands are marked with the letter "U". There is a fixed front sight and a two leaf, fold down rear sight. The stock has a boxed "HLH" script cartouche on the left side. The barrel and furniture have the standard Springfield national armory bright finish. The hammer and lock plate have a color casehardened finish and the breechblock has a black, oil-quenched finish. The rifle has a slotted head cleaning rod.

Excellent. The barrel, trigger guard, barrel bands and buttplate have an attractive original armory bright finish. The breech block retains 95% original black oil quenched finish and the lock plate retains half of the darkened original case colors. The hammer retains 97% plus vivid original case colors. The stock is also excellent with a putty filled repair near a lock screw head and a few minor handling marks. The cartouche is clear and crisp. Mechanically excellent.
