Manufactured by Colt in 1944. The pistol has the two line, two block address and patent markings divided by the Rampant Colt on the left side of the slide. The "P" proof and the inspector marking "G.H.D." (stamped twice) are marked on the left side of the frame. The right side of the frame is marked with a faint crossed cannon ordnance cartouche and "UNITED STATES PROPERTY M1911A1 U.S.ARMY / 1724149". The identification marking used on hardened slides ("MD 1") is double stamped on top of the slide, along with the "P" proof in front of the rear sight. Fitted with checkered grips with reinforcing ribs. The left side of the barrel is marked "COLT 45 AUTO", "P" on the left side of the barrel lug, and "GH" forward of the lug. The included photocopied July 19, 1945 dated Springfield Armory memo provides a list of 100 Model 1911A1 pistols that received hardened slides and austempered barrels at Camp Blanding or at Fort Benning. The serial number for this pistol was not listed, but the writer believes the slide to be correct. The memo states that the 100 pistols had Springfield Armory barrels marked "SA". As stated, this pistol does not have a "SA" marked barrel.
