Excellent U.S. Civil War Smith's Patent Breech Loading Percussion Carbine
Manufactured by the American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts, the Smith Carbine was one of the most important Federal Cavalry carbines, and were considered to be accurate and reliable weapons. Blade and folding ladder sights, with the distinctive spring loaded barrel latch at the rear of the barrel and "L.F.R" on the left flat. The left side of the frame is faintly marked "MANUFACTURED BY/ AM'N M'CH'N. WKS/ SPRINGFIELD MASS" under the sling bar, next to "ADDRESS / POULTNEY & TRIMBLE / BALTIMORE U.S.A." and "SMITH'S PATENT / JUNE 23, 1857". Matching serial numbers on the barrel and frame. Smooth forearm and straight grip walnut stock with "LFR" and "JH" cartouches on the wrist and "JH" on the comb ahead of the steel buttplate.

Condition: Excellent, with 85% plus faded original blue finish on the barrel, showing some light spotting and handling marks, along with a brown patina on the barrel band. Case colors are strong, particularly in the protected areas. A coating of protective grease has been applied to the metal. The stock is also excellent with some scattered minor dings and scratches. Mechanically excellent.
