Manufactured 1863-1865. The Burnside Carbine was designed by Federal General Ambrose E. Burnside before the Civil War and was one of the most widely issued and successful Federal cavalry carbines. This Fifth Model carbine has the distinctive guide screw in the right side of the receiver . The top of the receiver is marked "BURNSIDE PATENT/MODEL OF 1864", "CAST STEEL" ahead of the rear sight and the lock is marked "BURNSIDE RIFLE CO./PROVIDENCE=R.I." There are single letter inspection mark on various parts. The matching serial number is marked on the top of the breech block and frame. Pinched blade front sight and two leaf rear sight with graduations for 100, 300 and 500 yards. A cavalry sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The barrel has a dull military blue finish, the breech block, lever and receiver tangs are niter blue, and the receiver, hammer, barrel band, lock plate and buttplate are casehardened. Mounted with a smooth walnut forearm and straight grip stock with two clear boxed cartouches on the left wrist and small inspection stamp on the comb just ahead of the buttplate tang and on the bottom of the forearm.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 90% thinning original blue finish and the breechblock, tangs and lever retain 90% original niter blue finish. The remaining surfaces retain 95% original case colors. The wood is very fine with raised feathered grain, an area of chipping near the receiver, a series of deep pressure dents on the buttstock and some scattered minor handling marks. The cartouches are crisp. Mechanically fine.
