This is an excellent example of an original Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor rifle manufactured circa 1889. The lock is marked with the eagle shield motif followed by "U.S./SPRINGFIELD" ahead of the hammer. The breech is the correct low arch model marked "U.S./MODEL/1884". Pinned blade front sight and Buffington rear sight. The left rear of the barrel is marked with the "V/P/Eagle head/P" proof and inspector marks, with an "A" on the top. Blue finish with casehardened breechblock and upper tang. Three click tumbler and mounted with a one-piece stock with metal forend cap, two barrel bands, button head cleaning rod and steel "U.S." marked buttplate without compartment. Clear "SWP/1889" cartouche on the left wrist, a small "AL" and circled script "P" on the underside behind the lower tang.

Condition: Excellent. The barrel retains 90% plus of the original blue finish with some thinning to a smooth plum patina, with 97% original blue finish on the trigger guard and lower tang. The buttplate retains 70% original blue finish with a brown patina on the heel and toe. The lock and hammer retain 97% of the original blue finish. The breechblock and upper tang retain 90% plus original bright case colors. The stock is also excellent with a few overall scattered minor pressure dents and dings. The markings are crisp and clear. The action is excellent.
