Springfield Armory M1 Garand, 1958 production, Type I, National Match Rifle with Type II modifications. Produced circa 1953-1958, the "Type I" rifles were essentially standard production M1 rifles with hand selected components, with the "Type II", introduced in 1958, bringing in the specialized parts and glass bedding. "NM/ 062" blade front sight and "NM" peep rear with adjustable eye cup, "BS" elevation and "NM NHS" windage drums. Barrel is marked "NM *" on the left side, with "SA F6535448 4 56 A226B P M" on the right side of the chamber along with the Defense Acceptance stamp. Equipped with a 1962 operating rod stamped "NM" on the handle and "7790722-RA" and "NM" marked gas cylinder. The forearm is 'screwed and glued' to the lower barrel band. Springfield manufactured NM rifles had the forearms glued to the barrel bands and did not use the additional wood screws. The partial serial number "2959" is written on the inside of the stock which indicates that the stock is from another NM rifle. This rifle has no NM documentation but appears to be an original 1958 production Springfield Type I NM that was subsequently shooter-fitted with the improved NM components in 1962 or later and had the forearm attached by the popular 'screwed and glued' method. The stock is stamped with the Defense Acceptance mark on the left side below the rear sight and has an encircled "P" proofmark on the inside of the handguard and pistol grip. The rifle is complete with a CMP sales carton.
BBL: 24 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 30 06
Finish: parkerized
Grips:
Serial Number: 6080744
Condition: Excellent. The barrel, receiver group and trigger housing group retain approximately 98% of the original parkerized finish with minimal wear. Stock is very good as revarnished and non-arsenal bedded, with minimal handling marks and sharp proof and inspection marks. This is an excellent example of an original Type I NM rifle modified with the improved NM components introduced between 1960 and 1963 to update the rifle for competition.
