Excellent Special Order Winchester Deluxe Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Short Rifle with Fa
This excellent Deluxe Model 1886 Winchester Rifle is complete with a Cody Firearms Museum letter that states the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on October 15, 1902. The letter describes the rifle as "Extra Light", caliber 45/70 with a round, 22-inch barrel, "2/3 magazine", plain trigger, checkered walnut stock with pistol grip and shotgun butt with rubber butt plate. The rifle has a blued barrel, magazine, forearm cap and receiver with casehardened hammer, loading gate and loading lever. The stock and forearm are highly figured, fancy walnut with fine checkering and a high polish varnish finish. The stock is fitted with a hard rubber, Winchester Repeating Arms pistol grip cap and a black, hard rubber, checkered buttplate with the round Winchester logo in the middle. The barrel has a dovetailed, Lyman, "Hunting" front sight with ivory insert and a sporting style rear sight. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the two-line legend: "MANUFACTURED BY THE/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN.U.S.A." ahead of the rear sight. "NICKEL STEEL" is stamped on the left side of the barrel below the rear sight and the caliber, "45-70" is stamped on the top of the barrel between the rear sight and the receiver. The upper receiver tang is roll-stamped: "- MODEL 1886 -". The lower tang is stamped with the 1884 and 1885 patent dates behind the trigger and the serial number, "126450" behind the rear tang screw.

Excellent. The rifle retains 95% of the bright original blue and casehardened finish. Handling wear is limited to some minor thinning on the forearm cap and the under side of receiver and finish loss on the upper and lower receiver edges. The case colors on the loading gate have faded to a silver patina. The casehardened finish on the hammer and loading lever has strong case colors with some silvering on the bottom of the lever. The highly figured walnut stock and forearm are in excellent condition with nearly all of the varnish finish, sharp checkering and only minor handling marks. The barrel and tang markings are crisp. The limited production Model 1886 Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifles are rarely found with special order features. This is an outstanding, fully documented, example of an Extra Light-Weight Takedown Rifle with deluxe, fancy walnut stock and forearm.
