This is a nice example of an extremely rare "Zero Series" P.38 Pistol. These were the first of the military P.38s produced and approximately 13,714 were manufactured. This pistol is a Third Series with the standard firing pin and extractor. The Walther banner followed by "P.38" and the serial number are marked on the left side of the slide with the right side marked with two "eagle/359" proofs flanking the Nazi firing proof. The "eagle/359" proof is repeated on the left side of the frame and on almost all the parts. The left side of the barrel lug is marked with the bore diameter "8,83". The locking block is marked "466" on the bottom and has the correct inspection marks on the sides. The matching serial number appears on the left side of the frame and front of the barrel lug. An unusual feature is the "480 code" located inside both matching numbered grip panels. This code was only used by Walther from mid-1940 through October 1940 and was rarely found on "Zero Series" pistols. The pistol has the high polish blue finish and fitted with black bakelite grips featuring checkered side and rear panels with a round lanyard ring on the left heel. The magazine is marked with two "eagle/359" proofs on the lower spine and is numbered to another "0" Series pistol (08166).
BBL: 4 7/8 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 9 mm
Finish: blue
Grips: plastic
Serial Number: 05466
Condition: Near excellent. The pistol retains 90% original blue finish, showing some minor flaking on the slide and the front strap with a mix of thin original blue finish and smooth gray patina along with some edge and muzzle wear. Overall there are some scattered light scratches and a very small amount of pitting on the muzzle. The grips are very good, with a 1/2 inch x 3/4 inch chip on the upper rear right panel and a few minor scratches and light handling marks overall. The checkering is crisp. The action needs adjustment as the hammer does not always hold a cock position. The markings are clear and crisp.
