Excellent Royal Engineer's Officer Sword

Estimate: $1400 - 2250
Formally established in 1716, the Corps of Royal Engineers traces it lineage to Gundulf, Bishop of Rochester and first King's Engineer following the Norman Conquest, and while the Corps claims no direct battle honors they have been involved in virtually every British conflict of the past 300 years. Measuring 38 inches overall, the 32 3/4 inch blade bears elaborate etching on each side, a golden "HCW" proof seal on the right ricasso, "35496" on the spine, and the Wilkinson address on the left. On the right is the initials "WEM", with the left bearing the Engineer's motto "UBIQUE/QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT" (Everywhere/Where Duty and Glory Lead). Pierced-through metal guard, with the Victoria cipher among the decorations, a golden cord sword knot, and a wire wrapped sharkskin grip. With a leather covered scabbard, fitted with a nickel throat.
