Excellent Remington-Keene Sporting Rifle
This is a nice example of a Remington-Keene Sporting Rifle. The top of the bolt is marked "E. REMINGTON & SONS, ILION, N.Y. / PATENT FEBY. 24. MCH 17. 1874 JAN. 16 / SEP. 26. 1876 MCH 20 JULY 31 1877." There is no caliber designation, but the barrel gauges at 45, so writer believes it is 45-70 caliber. All bright blue finish except for the bright bolt and casehardened hammer mounted on the end of the bolt. The rear sight is a standard Remington folding single leaf sight with the left arm graduated 1,2,3 for use with the horizontal notch and 4-10 on the right arm for use with the slide when the leaf is in the vertical position. The front sight is a brass post mounted on a dovetail base on the front barrel band. Mounted with a smooth one piece straight grip half stock with iron forend cap and carbine style buttplate with cleaning rod compartment with three piece cleaning rod. Remington manufactured about 5,000 of these rifles in various configurations from 1880 to 1888.
