This example was 1 of 156 manufactured in 1923 and the barrel is marked "S A/flaming bomb/3- 23" just behind the standard front sight. The rear sight correctly does not have the 2,850 yard volley notch at the top. The muzzle has the star stamp showing it was gauged and approved along with the star gauge number "A/3854" stamped on top of the barrel under the handguard. The bolt has a curved knob, is correctly blued, and has the steel lot code "W L/3" stamped on top of the flat. Mounted on a select smooth walnut straight grip stock with grasping grooves, a boxed "D.A.L." cartouche on the left wrist, a circled "P" proof on the underside of the wrist, two reinforcing bolts and a smooth steel buttplate. With a Springfield Research Service letter stating serial number "1258928" was sold by San Antonio Arsenal as a Model 1903 Special Target to 1st Lieutenant L. D. Crawford, Fort Sam Houston, Texas in August of 1928.

Excellent, 98% plus of the original matte blue finish remains with some scattered minor scratches and some minor high edge wear. The highly figured walnut stock is excellent plus with only some scattered minor marks. Mechanically excellent. A truly exceptional U.S. Springfield Model 1903 Special Target Rifle.
