The Super-Fox was developed in 1922 as a collaboration with Western Cartridge Company for their revolutionary Super X shotshells. This collobaration included a list of some of the most famous firearms personalities of the early 20th Century. John Olin developed the new cartridges for his company, along with Charles Askins, Sr., the best known gun writer in the country at the time. While testing the cartridges, they discovered that they performed best through an A.H. Fox shotgun that had been bored out by Philadelphia gunsmith, Burt Becker. Olin sent this gun and the newly developed shells to be tested in the field by one of his friends, Nash Buckingham, in Memphis, TN. Buckingham was also a well known writer at the time and would eventually become best known for his hunting exploits with his own Super-Fox, nicknamed Bo-Whoop. Askins eventually headed to Philadelphia to work with Becker at the Fox factory in developing the Super-Fox with John Olin receiving the first factory-built Super-Fox at the end of 1922. While the Super-Fox uses the same mechanics and appears very similar in styling to the other graded Fox shotguns, Becker designed them with extremely close tolerances and extra features to insure the best shooting performance. Despite the marketing campaign that initally touted a guaranteed full-choke pattern of 80%, the Super-Fox was a very specialized gun for the serious hunter and never became popular among the masses, with only 300 approximately being made over a 20 year period. This particular Super-Fox was manufactured in 1929, around the time that Savage was purchasing the A.H. Fox Company, but still shows the desirable Philadelphia barrel address. There is a single steel bead sight on the matte solid rib, choked modified/full and 2 3/4 inch chambers with ejectors. The receiver has simple border engraving with the serial number and "H" stamped on the watertable. Mounted on a multi-point checkered walnut forearm and pistol grip stock with hard rubber grip cap and buttplate. Length of pull is 14 1/4 inches.
BBL: 30 inch solid rib
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 12
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 33536
Condition:
Excellent, 95% plus original blue finish with a few scattered minor handling marks. The casehardened components retain 90% original case colors with some handling wear. The wood is very good with a series of indentations on the front of the pistol grip and some scattered minor scratches and dings overall. Mechanically excellent. Because of the specialized nature of this gun and the small number of them built, it is very difficult to find any Super-Fox with original condition left on it, much less the amount of original finish that this example has. This is a once in a collector's lifetime chance at a very rare, desirable Fox shotgun in extraordinary original condition.
