Excellent, Pre-War, Colt Frontier Six Shooter Single Action Army Revolver with Extra Cylinder
Colt Single Action Army Revolver manufactured in 1938. The left side of the barrel is roll-stamped with the second style .44-40 marking: "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER .44-40" which was introduced in 1923 and used until 1938. This is one of the last Colt .44-40 Single Actions to bear the "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" legend. The revolver is complete with a spare caliber .44 Special cylinder. The cylinder is stamped "44" on the rear face and marked with the five-pointed star indicating extra grade steel on the front face. The top of the barrel is roll-stamped: "COLT'S PT.F.A.MFG. Co. HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped with the Colt 'two-line/two-date' patent markings followed by the Rampant Colt trademark. The left front trigger guard bow is stamped with a "T" assembler's mark above the Colt Triangle V/P proofmark. The loading gate is stamped with the assembly number "75". The serial number, "356416" is located on the bottom of the frame. The black, hard rubber, two-piece, grips are checkered and have the Rampant Colt trademark in an oval at the top. The revolver has the Colt commercial blue finish on the barrel, cylinders, trigger guard, backstrap and top of the hammer. The sides of the hammer are polished. The frame and loading gate are casehardened with vivid case colors.
BBL: 5 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 44-40 WCF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips: black hard rubber
Serial Number: 356416
Condition: Excellent. It appears to be unfired and retains 99% of the original blue and casehardened finish. Wear is limited to a trace of finish loss on the left side of the muzzle and some very minor flaking on the left recoil shield and loading gate. The cylinder has only traces of drag marks. The spare cylinder has 99% of the original blue finish and does not appear to have been fitted into the revolver. The frame has fiery case colors. The grips are in nearly new condition with traces of age browning. This is an exceptional example of a very late production, pre-war Colt Single Action revolver. This is one of the last, if not the last, pre-war Single Actions with "COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER" barrel markings. It would be difficult to improve upon this outstanding revolver.
