Manufacturer: Providence Tool Company Model: Peabody
Peabody rifle manufactured by the Providence Tool Co., of Providence, Rhode Island, c. 1866-1871. Developed during the Civil War the Peabody rifle performed well in Springfield Armory trials but the end of the Civil War terminated U.S. Army interest in the rifle. However large numbers of Peabody rifles were sold to France, Spain, Mexico and Canada. Connecticut, Massachusetts and South Carolina also purchased Peabody rifles and carbines for issue to the militia. The rifle has a military blue barrel and barrel bands with color casehardened receiver, hammer, breechblock, lever and buttplate. The stock and forearm are oil finished black walnut. The barrel has a block front sight that serves as a lug for a socket bayonet and a folding leaf rear sight. The rifle has a bright finished cleaning rod with knurled head. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped "PEABODY'S PATENT/JULY 22. 1862/MAN'F'D BY/PROVIDENCE TOOL CO./PROV. R.I." in five lines. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with the circled "W.C." Providence Tool Co., inspection mark. "Crown/V" proofmarks are stamped on the barrel behind the rear sight and on the top of the receiver. The Peabody rifle was a well designed firearm that used by several foreign armies.

Condition:
Excellent plus. The rifle appears to be as issued and shows only very minor storage wear. The barrel, barrel bands and rear sight retain nearly all of the military blue finish. The receiver, hammer, breechblock, lever and buttplate have 98% or more of the fiery case colors intact. The receiver screws have most of the niter blue finish. The stock and forearm are near perfect. The receiver and stock markings are extremely crisp. This is a nearly new example of a popular and important breech loading military rifle that would be very difficult to improve upon.
