Excellent Merwin Hulbert Large Frame Single Action Pocket Army Revolver

Manufactured 1876 to 1880s. Also known as the Pocket Army Variant, this is an example of a late production Merwin Hulbert Large Frame Single Action Revolver with 3 1/4 inch barrel, topstrap and bird's head butt. The serial number "487" is stamped on the right side of the frame. The assembly number "498" is stamped on the frame under the left grip panel, rear cylinder face and rear of the barrel. The revolver has a nickel plated finish with color casehardened hammer and trigger guard. The two piece hard rubber grips are checkered. The left side of the frame under the cylinder is stamped "CALIBRE/WINCHESTER" followed by "1873", which indicates that the revolver is chambered for the 44-40 caliber cartridge. The right side of the frame has the desirable Pocket Army marking: "MERWIN, HULBERT & CO. N.Y./POCKET ARMY". The left side of the barrel is stamped with the two line address/patent dates (Jan. 1874 to March 1877) marking. The six shot cylinder has the early style scooped flutes. The blade front sight is integral to the barrel and the notch rear sight is integral to the top of the frame. Fitted with bird head grips.

Excellent. The revolver retains 98% original nickel finish showing some flaking (mostly on the right side of the frame). The hammer and trigger guard retain traces of original case colors. The grips are also excellent with a few minor handling marks and overall crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent.
