This is an excellent, all original late World War I production Colt Model 1911 "US Army" contract pistol that was manufactured in October 1918. This desirable 1911 has the distinctive late production blue-black, "Black Army" finish. The "Black Army" finish was adopted by Colt in mid-1918 to expedite production. This specific pistol has been fitted with the late production A. J. Savage marked slide. This style of slide has been used intermittently during this last US Army contract as manufactured by Colt. The left side of the frame is marked with the late "Eagle's head/s14" inspection stamp over the magazine release button with "UNITED STATES PROPERTY" roll-stamped on the frame ahead of the trigger guard. The right side of the frame is stamped with only the serial number, "430469" with the top of the frame stamped with the single "H" provisional ordnance inspector marked followed by the single letter "G" production order stamp. The slide as noted was produced by the A.J. Savage company and is marked with various patent dates in three lines on the left side, along with the "Flaming Shell/S" proof of the Savage company with the "MODEL OF 1911 ARMY" on the right side. The top of the barrel is marked with the (separated "H" and "P" proofs of the Colt factory, with a single number "5" on the underside in front of the barrel lugs. This pistol is fitted with the late production 1918 style safety lock with thick thumb piece, slide with second style recoil spring housing, with the checkered slide stop release and smooth main spring housing. The pistol is fitted with checkered walnut grips with the diamond pattern around the grip screws. It is complete with an original Colt two-tone magazine.
BBL: 5 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 45 ACP
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 430469
Condition: Excellent with 98% of the original late Black Army style finish overall with some minor flaking of the blue finish on the right side of the slide with some minor wear and blue loss on the area over the markings on the left side of the slide, the area directly below the slide stop release, the grip safety, main spring housing and rear edges of the slide. The grips are in excellent condition overall with a nice dark brown matching color on both grip panels, with nice sharp distinct checkering on both sides with only minor handling marks. This is a really nice all original, example of a late World War I U.S. Colt Model 1911 US Army contract pistol with the A.J. savage slide. This is a wonderful example to add to a U.S.1911 collection that fills a usually vacant slot.
