John Hay autograph letter signed, datelined 15 November 1892 from Cleveland, Ohio. Here, Hay writes to a Mr. Stedman regarding a portrait of Lincoln, as Hay was President Lincoln's private secretary. Reads in full: ''I have your letter of the 9th. I suppose I ought to be ashamed to confess it – but to tell the truth and shame the Devil, I have no good portrait of Lincoln. He left the business of illustrations entirely to Mr. Drake. Regretting that I cannot help you, I am Yours faithfully, John Hay.'' Someone has written ''3005-07'' in light pencil at lower left. Letter is matted to a piece of white cardstock and measures 5'' x 8''. Near fine condition.
