Manufactured in 1957, the first year of manufacture of the Buntline Special revolver. Colt manufactured approximately 3,900 of these Buntline Specials from 1957 to 1975. The "Buntline Special" was named after a dime novelist named Ned Buntline who supposedly gave this long barrel revolver to Wyatt Earp. The story is suspected to be purely legend, however Colt decided to take advantage of the market and produced the 12 inch barreled Single Action Army revolver. Standard one line address on top of the barrel and "COLT BUNTLINE SPECIAL .45" on the left side. The bottom of the barrel is marked with the stock number "BB156?", (last number covered by the cylinder pin), just ahead of the cylinder pin. Two line, three patent date marking on the left side of the frame followed by the Rampant Colt. The matching serial number is marked on the bottom of the frame and on the left side of the grip straps under the grips. The inside of the grips are numbered to the gun. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with the Colt "VP" triangle proof and "J" at the rear, and "0" on the upper right front. Standard blade front and frame notch rear sights, casehardened frame, blue on the remaining parts and fitted with checkered hard rubber grips. Complete with the original black hinged lid box numbered to the gun, waxed paper, bore brush and papers.
