Excellent Evans Lever Action Sporting Rifle
Manufactured circa 1876 to 1887. Although the serial number falls out of the suspected Transition Model serial number range (500-2185), the rifle has the features associated with the Transition Model including the exposed lading port, two piece buttstock surrounding the magazine, buttplate without a heel and forearm fitting into cut-out sides of the forward section of the frame. The top barrel flat is marked with the serial number and "EVANS REPEATING RIFLE MECHANIC FALLS ME PAT DEC 8, 1868 & SEP 16, 1878" (note that the marking is in one line as associated with the New Model but is without "U.S.A." at the end of the patent dates). Finished with the rarely seen nickel plating with casehardened buttplate. Fitted with a dovetail front sight and fixed notch rear sight with flip up adjustable peep sight.

Excellent. The rifle retains approximately 90% of the original period nickel finish mixed with some patches of smooth brown patina and some light flaking. The lever retains over half of the nickel with the balance a smooth bright gray patina. The buttplate retains heavy amounts of the darkened case colors with the balance a smooth brown patina with some pin point pitting. The wood is excellent with most of the varnish, some minor dings and scratches. Mechanically functions fine, but lever does not stay up all the way when the action is turned.
