Manufacturer: Winchester Model: 1885-Rifle
Winchester Model 1885 "High Wall" single shot target rifle manufactured in 1887. The rifle is accompanied by a Cody Firearms Museum letter that lists the rifle features as: "32/40. #3, 30-inch, 1/2 octagon barrel, Set trigger. Checkered stock, Pistol grip, Lyman and Beach sight" and Rod in butt". The letter states that the rifle was shipped from the Winchester warehouse on April 11, 1887. The rifle has a blued barrel and color casehardened receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever and crescent buttplate. The forearm and pistol grip stock are fancy grain highly figured walnut with "Style H" checkering and high polish "piano" finish. The pistol grip and forearm tip have ebony inlays. The rifle has a thinside receiver and hammer with the early style milled knurling. A Malcolm telescopic sight is mounted on the barrel using the front sight dovetail and a second dovetail behind the rear sight. The telescopic sight has a 33 1/4-inch blue tube marked: "WM MALCOLM/SYRACUSE/NY". The 30 inch 1/2-round/1/2-octagon No. 3 barrel has the original Beach front sight replaced with the Malcolm front sight base and has a dovetail mounted sporting style rear sight. The upper receiver tang is factory drilled and tapped for a rear sight and appears to have originally been fitted with a Lyman folding combination rear sight referenced in the factory letter. The buttplate has a sliding brass trap door and the trap contains a five-piece jointed steel cleaning rod with brass tip. The top barrel flat is roll-stamped with the two-line legend "-MANUFACTURED BY THE-/-WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN. CONN. U.S.A.-" ahead of the rear sight. The caliber designation "32-40" is stamped on the top barrel flat between the telescopic sight mount dovetail and the receiver. The lower receiver tang is stamped with the serial number "9183" in script numerals. The Model 1885 Rifle was the first John M. Browning designed firearm manufactured by Winchester and launched the long and historical association between Winchester and firearms genius John Browning.

Condition:
Excellent. The barrel retains 85% plus of the original blue finish and shows only very minor wear at the muzzle and the edges of flats. The Winchester markings are crisp. The receiver, breechblock, hammer, lever and buttplate have 95% plus of the vivid case colors intact. The stock and forearm are excellent plus and retain nearly all of the original piano finish. The checkering on the stock and forearm is sharp. Wear is limited to a few very insignificant handling marks. The telescopic sight is excellent; the scope tube retains 97% plus of the original blue finish and most of the case colors are present on the mounts. This is an excellent example of a deluxe Winchester Model 1885 "High-Wall" target rifle with scarce Malcolm telescopic sight.
