Excellent Desirable and Rare London Cased Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy Revolver
Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy revolver manufactured in 1862. The revolver has the distinctive steel trigger guard and backstrap with "L" prefix serial number that of Model 1862 Pocket Navy revolvers manufactured for the British market. The barrel, cylinder, trigger guard and backstrap have a high polish blue finish. The loading lever, hammer and frame are casehardened and the one-piece grip has a varnished, 'piano' finish. The revolver is complete with a British, seven compartment, oak case with green baize lining. The case is complete with the original accessories. The case contains: (1) steel cleaning rod, (2) blued, L-shaped screw-driver/nipple wrench, (3) iron, double cavity, bullet mold marked: "COLT'S/PATENT" on the spruce cutter and "36P" on the right block, (4) "JAMES, DIXON/& SONS/SHEFFIELD" marked pewter oil bottle, (5) 500 cap tin of green label Eley Bros., percussion caps for "Colt's PT Belt and Pocket Pistols" and (6) bag shaped powder flask marked: "COLTS POCKET FLASK" and "JAMES DIXON/& SONS/SHEFFIELD". The inside of the case lid has a correct original illustrated label entitled "COLT'S PATENT FIRE-ARMS MANUFACTURING CO.,/ 14, PALL MALL LONDON, S.W.". The top of the barrel is roll-stamped with the legend: "ADDRESS COL. SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S. AMERICA" in one line. The left side of the frame is stamped: "COLTS/PATENT". "36 CAL" is stamped on the left shoulder of the trigger guard. The cylinder is roll-engraved with the Stagecoach Holdup scene and "COLTS PATENT". London "Crown/V" and "CROWN/CP" proof and inspection marks are stamped on the left side of the barrel lug and on each chamber of the cylinder. The full serial number, "L/13804" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug, trigger guard and backstrap. The cylinder is stamped with the partial serial number, "3804" and the loading lever is numbered "804". All of the visible serial numbers match.

Condition: Excellent. The revolver retains 85% of the bright original blue and 95% plus casehardened finish. The blue on the barrel has flaked at the muzzle and there is some edge wear and light storage scratches on the sides of the barrel and lug. The cylinder retains about 70% of the blue finish and nearly all of the Stagecoach Holdup scene. The trigger guard and backstrap have at least 90% of the blue finish; wear is limited to several minor scratches on the inside of the grip strap. All of the safety pins are intact and the percussion nipples and rear face of the cylinder show minimal firing wear. The loading lever, frame and hammer retain at least 95% of the original fiery case colors. Most of the niter blue finish is present on the frame and grip screws. The grip is excellent condition with nearly all of the piano finish varnish and minimal handling wear. The case exterior is in fine condition with scattered handling marks and no cracks. The green baize interior is slightly faded but remains in fine condition. The label is excellent with some minor fading and only one small spot of discoloration from contact with the revolver cylinder. The screw-driver and bullet mold are in very good condition with more than 85% of the original blue finish. The pewter oil bottle is tarnished but remains in excellent condition. The powder flask is in excellent condition with 97% or more of the brown lacquer finish on the body and nearly all of the gold-plated finish on the top and charger. The cap tin is in fine condition and retains 80% or more of the black lacquer finish and nearly all of the green label. The revolver action is tight and functions perfectly. This is a very rare, seldom encountered example of a London Cased Colt Model 1862 Pocket Navy Revolver complete with all of the original accessories. Writer can recall only a few of these ever offered for sale!
