This Smith Carbine was manufactured by American Machine Works in Springfield, Massachusetts c. 1861-65. The carbine has a blue part-round/part-octagon barrel with dovetail mounted brass front sight blade and folding leaf rear sight. The left side of the casehardened receiver is fitted with a sling bar and ring for a cavalry carbine sling. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The Smith patent markings are roll-stamped vertically on the left side of the receiver. The three-line Poultney & Trimble address is roll-stamped near the top of the left side of the receiver and the three line American Machine Works address is located beneath the sling bar. The serial number, "11960", is located on the bottom of the forward portion of the breech. "11" is stamped on the lower right side of the receiver and "960" is stamped on the lower left side. The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with two Ordnance inspection marks; "LFR" is script letters with a rectangular border and "JH" is script letters with an oval border. An "LFR" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the left barrel flat and a "JH" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the stock comb is front of the buttplate heel. The Smith Carbine was a popular and widely issued Civil War Federal cavalry carbine.

Serial Number: 11960
Condition: Excellent. The carbine is in an un-issued, un-fired condition and retains 96% plus of the original blue and casehardened finish overall. The carbine shows only minor storage wear with discoloration and oxidization on the niter blue barrel latch, the bottom of the trigger guard and the buttplate. The barrel retains virtually all of the military blue finish and the bore is in perfect condition. There is no flash pitting on the percussion nipple or the face of the breech. The casehardened receiver and hammer retain nearly 95% of the subdued case colors. The barrel band has a brown patina. The stock and forearm are in excellent plus condition with exceptional sharp Ordnance inspection marks unhandled raised grain and minimal storage wear. This is an excellent example of a key Federal cavalry carbine.
