Civil War Smith Carbine manufactured by American Machine Works of Springfield, Massachusetts between 1861 and 1865. The carbine has a military blue, part-octagon, part-round, barrel with folding adjustable leaf rear sight. The breech latch, trigger guard and lower tang have a fiery, niter blue, finish. The barrel band, hammer, receiver and buttplate have a color casehardened finish. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The stock and forearm are oil-finished black walnut. The left side of the receiver is roll-stamped with the American Machine Works markings in three lines above the sling bar and has the Poultney & Trimble markings below it. The 1857 patent date is stamped vertically on the left side of the receiver. The serial number, "6467" is stamped on the bottom of the barrel lug. The partial serial number "64" is stamped on the left side of the receiver lug and "76" is stamped on the right side. The left barrel flat is stamped with the Ordnance sub-inspection mark "L.F.R.". The left side of the stock wrist is stamped with two Ordnance inspection marks that consist of the script initials "GR" in a rectangle and the script initials "JH" in an oval. Approximately 30,000 Smith Carbines were manufactured between 1861 and 1865. The carbine was widely issued to Federal cavalry regiments and is one of the most important Civil War carbines.

The barrel latch, trigger guard and lower tang retain nearly 95% of the niter blue finish. The receiver and hammer have vivid case colors. The buttplate shows storage wear and has a dark patina. The factory markings on the receiver are sharp and the Ordnance inspection marks on the barrel and stock wrist are extremely crisp. The stock and forearm are in excellent condition. Wear is limited to several very minor storage marks. This is an excellent example of an important Federal Civil War cavalry carbine.
