Manufacturer: Gwyn & Campbell Model: Union
Type II "Union Carbine" manufactured by Edward Gwyn and Abner Campbell of Hamilton, Ohio, c.1863-1864. The carbine has the Type II pivot-type lever latch, flat hammer with beveled edges, short lever, and short base rear sight. A sling bar and ring are mounted on the left side of the receiver. The part-round/part-octagon barrel has a military blue finish with wide base iron front sight and folding leaf rear sight. The rear sight, breechblock, upper receiver tang and butt plate have a niter blue finish. The receiver, side plate, hammer, lever and lower tang are color casehardened. The stock is black walnut with an oil finish. The lock plate is marked: "GWYN & CAMPBELL" in an arch above "PATENT/1862/HAMILTON.O." in three lines. "UNION/RIFLE" is stamped vertically on the right side of the receiver. The serial number, "2910" is stamped on the bottom of the receiver, underside of the barrel, loading lever, breechblock lever latch. All of the visible numbers match. Single letter Ordnance inspection marks are stamped on most components. The Ordnance Department final inspection mark which consists of the script initials "WHR" in a rectangle is stamped on the left side of the stock wrist. A small "WHR" sub-inspection mark is stamped on the stock comb just ahead of the buttplate. Gwyn & Campbell manufactured approximately 4,000 Type II breech loading carbines in 1863 and 1864. These carbines were issued primarily to Federal cavalry regiments in the Army of the Cumberland and the Army of the Tennessee.
BBL: 20 inch
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 2910
Condition:
Excellent. The carbine appears to be as-issued and un-fired and shows only very limited storage wear. The barrel retains nearly 98% of the military blue finish. The rear sight, breechblock, upper tang and buttplate have 95% of the fiery niter blue finish intact. The receiver, hammer, side plate, lever and lower tang and retain close to 98% of the casehardened finish with strong case colors. The stock is also excellent with minimal storage marks and a near-perfect Ordnance final inspection mark. It would be very difficult to improve upon the condition of this excellent and original Gwyn & Campbell Type II Carbine.
