Manufacturer: E.G. Lamson & Co. Model: Ball Carbine
This is a exceptional example of a scarce Civil War contract Ball Carbine manufactured by Lamson & Co. with a total production of only approximately 1,002. The left side of the receiver is marked "E.G. LAMSON & CO./WINDSOR. VT./U.S./BALLS PATENT./JUNE.23.1863/MAR. 15, 1864.". There is a small "S" stamped on most of the components and a very small "GGS" stamped on the bottom of the forearm and top of the stock just ahead of the buttplate tang. Fixed blade front sight and two leaf folding rear sight with "1", "4" and "6" graduation markings. Cleaning rod on the right side of the forearm and sling ring and bar on the left side of the receiver. Blue barrel, casehardened remaining parts and mounted with a smooth walnut forearm with steel end cap and straight grip stock with an iron carbine buttplate and sharp "GGS" cartouche on the left wrist with a "P" next to it.
BBL: 20 1/2 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 50 RF
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: NSN
Condition:
Excellent. The carbine appears unfired. The barrel has faded to a very attractive chocolate brown. There is a small area of minor pitting on the left side at the rear sight. The receiver, hammer, buttplate and barrel bands retain 98% original bright case colors. The lever retains 50% original vivid case colors with a smooth silver gray on the balance. The wood is also excellent with a few minor pressure dents and handling marks. As noted above the cartouche and "P" on the stock are sharp. The markings remain crisp and clear. The action is excellent. An exceptional Ball Civil War carbine.
