Excellent Admiral Dewey Cabinet Card Photo Album
Excellent Admiral Dewey Cabinet Card Photo Album (circa 1900) with a fabulous and colorful lithographed celluloid cover. This padded photo album was made to hold 28 cabinet card sized photos and is 8.5" x 10.5" x 2.5" in overall dimensions. The front cover features a handsome portrait of Dewey in uniform in an oval with a foliated border against a dual flag background. The caption reads "Admiral George Dewey, U.S.N. The Hero of Manila and his Victorious Fleet" and the following ships are pictured above and below: Boston, Concord, Petrel, Raleigh, Olympia,>Q and Baltimore. Dewey, of course, had been on the USS Olympia where he gave that famous command on the morning of May 1, 1898 at Manila Bay, "You may fire when you are ready, Gridley." The battle lasted a scant six hours; he captured or sunk the entire Spanish Pacific fleet without a loss of an American life. He arrived home to a hero's welcome and was made Admiral of the Navy by an act of Congress in 1899, the only person ever to hold that rank. This is just one of the many souvenir items manufactured at the time in his honor. You will likely not find a nicer one of these albums anywhere. There is some wear to the patterned velvet spine and back cover but the front cover is still bright and intact, the clasp is present and functioning, and the photo pages are clean- just waiting for your collection of period cabinet cards to be inserted.
