Peter S. Du Ponceau Writes About Bringing A Benchmark Case to the Supreme Court Autograph Letter Signed, two pages, 7.25" x 9", Philadelphia, January 19, 1808. To Stephen Dutilh. Co-signed by patriot and eminent attorney Edward Tilghman. With integral address leaf. Accompanied by full typed transcription. Lawyers, linguists and most certainly, esteemed Philadelphians, will want to consider bidding on this excellent legal letter of the lawyer, linguist and esteemed Philadelphian, Peter S. Du Ponceau. It discusses a famous Supreme Court case on international law, mentions, unfavorably, the newly appointed Justice Henry Brockholst Livingston, and is co-signed, as well, by the eminent lawyer and Philadelphian, Edward Tilghman. Here is an excerpt: "Mr. Lewis [seemingly William Lewis (1752-1819), a leader of the Philadelphia bar] cannot attend the Washington Court this session. Hence the labour in the important causes of Rose vs. Himely [that's 4 Cranch, 268 for those who care to look it up]... will fall more heavily upon us... This will be the third time, that we go to Washington on that business, and each time we have failed... This time we hope they will be argued, & we shall exert ourselves to the utmost to succeed, tho' we shall have strong prejudices to contend against... from the appointment of Mr. Justice Livingston, who had already decided at New York, a similar case against us..." A small hole at margin, not effecting text, else very fine. From the Henry E. Luhrs Collection.
