Provenance:
Dawson Gallery, Dublin;
Taylor Galleries, Dublin;
Taylor de Vere White auction, Dublin, 1989 (as Battlements and Fishing);
Private collection, Dublin
Painted circa 1945, this is one of three large oils, all of the same size and all featuring scenes in Youghal, which were painted for Leo Smith of the Dawson Gallery, Dublin. The other two depict warehouses and the inner harbour at Youghal. Due to heavy commitments with the stained glass business, Hone rarely painted such easel pictures during this period of her life. A study for the present work, signed and dated 1944, gouache on paper, was donated by Miss R. S. R. Kirkpatrick to the National Gallery of Ireland and is reproduced in their Illusrated Summary Catalogue of Drawings, Watercolours and Miniatures, compiled by Adrian Le Harivel, 1983, p. 290, catalogue no. 7860. (With thanks to Oliver and Muriel Hone for their help in cataloguing this work).
