Evie Hone (1894-1955) STATIONS OF THE CROSS FOR KILTULLAGH CHURCH, COUNTY GALWAY (COMPLETE SET OF FOURTEEN)<BR>each signed lower left or lower right; individual titles hand-printed on original mounts<BR>gouache on board (mounted but unframed)<BR>30 by 24cm., 12 by 9.5in.<BR><BR>Exhibited:<BR>Five individual drawings for the Kiltullagh Stations of the Cross were offered for sale at 15 guineas each and exhibited at the Dawson Gallery, Dublin, ‘Religious and Secular Works by Evie Hone’, June 1957, catalogue no.s 10-14; whether the five drawings were from the present set or from further gouache or ink-drawn studies is unknown<BR><BR>Literature:<BR>C. Curran, ‘Evie Hone: Stained Glass Worker’, Studies, Winter 1955, page 4;<BR>Thomas MacGreevy, ‘St Brendan’s Cathedral, Loughrea’, Capuchin Annual, 1946-47, pp. 353-373<BR><BR>Fourteen gouache studies for the set of Stations of the Cross which were commissioned in 1945-46 for the Church of St Peter and Paul at Kiltullagh, near Athenry in Co. Galway. Both the gouache studies and the final Stations, painted in oil, were highly regarded by such critics as C. P. Curran, who referred to them as “admirable work”. Another work relating to the Kiltullagh Stations sold through these rooms on March 13th 2001, lot 90.<BR>
