Evans lever-action repeating rifle, .44 Evans centerfire caliber, transition model with Mechanic Falls address, fully and finely period or factory scroll engraved in Nimschke style with the name James Barbour engraved in banner incorporated into scrolls on left side of frame, blue and nickel finish, select burl wood stocks, serial #674. The name James Barbour is believed to be James Barbour of Virginia, prominent American lawyer, planter, delegate from Virginia to the Democratic Nationa Convention, delegate to the Virginia Secession Convention and Major in the Confederate States Army in the Civil War. After the war, Mr. Barbour obtained interested in the Richmond Dailey Enquirer and Examiner and became their editor. In 1885 he ran for the Virginia house of delegates and served until 1888 when he retired. He died October 29, 1895 at Clover Hill in Jeffersonton, Culpepper County Virginia. The rifle retains 95% of its bright original blue on the barrel, just some slight beginning age. The frame, forend cap, magazine tube, and butt, show 90-95% original uncleaned satin nickel finish with a light coating of dried oil, some slight losses, mostly on the butt.
