This Evans vase is a find! It is a substantial example of early swirl pottery production begun in the 1930s.

The swirl pattern results as the potters threw lumps of several colors of clay on the wheel. The colorful clays used were naturally occurring clays found in Arkansas, Missouri, and other more southerly states of the US.

The body of the vase was made by mixing both yellow-brown, blue-gray, and off-white colored clays. The swirling of the clays gives each piece its unique design. This mixture is the main focus which inhabits the vase form.

This vase is 8 1/2 inches high and 4 1/4 inches at the widest point. It is 4 inches across the top and has a 3-inch base.

This vase is in excellent overall condition. It does have a small kiln "kiss" on the rim. There is a small stain on the interior which appears to be removable. This vase is not marked.

The Evans family was well known for its swirl pottery which it began to produce shortly after Niloak began making its Mission Swirl line. Hugh Evans established Evans Pottery in 1849. Arthur, his son, established the Desert Sands Pottery in Boulder City, Nevada in the 1940s and made pottery in a swirl pattern. Randal, another son, continued Evans Pottery until his death in 1971.
