Evans Lever Action Repeating Cartridge Sporting Rifle, NVSN, .44 Evans CF cal., 28.5'' round barrel having dovetailed blade front and unusual notched and adjustable leaf rear sight, marked ''Evans Sporting Rifle'' ahead of rear sight; single spring-retained barrel band with base for sling swivel (missing); steel receiver with right-side cartridge ejection door that automatically slides rearward when serpentine operating lever is actuated downward, and unique internal cartridge magazine and Archimedean-screw feed mechanism in butt; oil-finished walnut forend and two-piece buttstock with steel buttplate having opening through which cartridges are loaded. Condition is good to very good, the metal parts retaining no original finish but an overall smooth gunmetal gray-brown with occasional dings and scrapes. Stocks are sound with assorted scrapes and bruises, mainly on left side of forend. Both upper and lower sling swivels are missing but the gun appears otherwise complete. Action seems to function as designed; bore is clean with deep rifling. Originally designed by Maine dentist Warren R. Evans, who also designed this rifle's unique cartridge. These later ''Evans Sporting Rifles'' are believed to have derived from cut-down military muskets altered and assembled from parts after the Evans Co. went bankrupt c. 1879. Est.: $800-$1,000.
