Evangeline Walton Witch House First Edition. (Sauk City, Wisconsin: Arkham House, 1945), first edition, 200 pages, black Novelex cloth with bright green lettering on spine, 12mo (5" x 7.5"), dust jacket (in protective Mylar). One of 3,000 copies. This, Walton's second novel, was the first title in the Library of Arkham House Novels of Fantasy and Terror, placing it in front of works by other well-established authors as Frank Belknap Long, Fritz Leiber, and H.P. Lovecraft. Witch House is a carefully crafted New England haunted house story reminiscent of Turn of the Screw and Cold Harbour, yet wholly original. Walton received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the World Fantasy Convention in 1989. This copy is about fine, with very little edge wear and small pencil marks on the rear free endpaper. Otherwise, this volume is beautiful.
