European Wheelock rifle, probably Saxon, circa approx. early to mid 1600’s with nicely engraved lock and fancy stag-horn inlayed stock. The barrel shows maker’s mark with the initials “N. A. X.” The lock is very high quality and shows an internal wheel and hammer spring. The lock is nicely engraved with scrolls, a village on a hill, farmer and sheep, and other classic motifs. The hammer is nicely pierced with cherub, man, and other figures. The stock shows original horn inlay with a Saxon type heraldic crest inlayed in cheekpiece area surrounded by scrolls with gargoyles, florals, and lady. The metal surfaces remain in good condition with light to moderate erosion and surface pitting. The stock is good with some small losses, old repairs, and minor restorations. The original horn buttcap is retained and there is a spanner wrench within the patchbox which operates the rifle, but is of a later period. The action is fully working. A good quality Wheelock with nice inlay. Est: $4,000 - $8,000
