European Great Helm with frog’s mouth style front circa 1470 approximate. The helmet shows early forging with considerable slag and irregular lines that occur when forging at lower temperatures (1100’-1200’). Thecooling of the steel was essential to provide hardness and the structure of the steel itself can be seen like grain or “skin” pattern; particularly when photographed and enlarged. We have had this helmet examined by a top metallurgist and several armour experts who aided us in authenticating this helmet. The helmet is constructed in three (3) gauges of thickness, heavy in front to guard from blows, medium at center to bedefensive but lighten and lightest at rear where the least threat would occur in a joust. The helmet weighs 9-1/2 lbs. and is properly constructed so wearer is protected when head is raised to prevent splinters from lance coming through eye slot. The attachment latch area has been repaired and two (2) rivets restored. The condition is good for its age and there is some openings (small holes from rusting) in the back. In
