During the reign of João IV (1640–1656), Portuguese India saw a renewed focus on consolidation and
defense following the end of Spanish rule. Goa remained the administrative and religious center, while
efforts were made to secure key territories amid growing threats from the Dutch and English. João IV
strengthened fortifications and supported missionary activities, aiming to preserve Portuguese influence
in the region. Though expansion was limited, his reign marked a critical phase of maintaining control over
existing Indian holdings during a period of intense European rivalry, ensuring that Portuguese presence in
India endured despite mounting external pressures.
