Adopted son of Napoleon Bonaparte (1781–1824), the natural son of Napoleon’s wife, Josephine, and Alexandre, Vicomte de Beauharnais, who had been executed during the Reign of Terror. Eugène proved to be an able military leader and, in addition to serving as Napoleon’s aide-de-camp, led several campaigns in Italy and Russia. LS in French, one page, 8 x 10, February 29, 1808. Letter to the minister of war, in part (translated): "I have issued orders to Alexandria that three hundred and seventy Neopolitan convicts are to be employed in work on the fortifications. I am not able to send the six hundred that you ask for, they do not exist." In fine condition.
